Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Removals Docklands
Removals Docklands is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our moving and relocation activities. This Health and Safety policy outlines our approach to managing risks associated with removals work, including packing, loading, transportation, unloading and storage.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We aim to conduct all operations in a manner that prevents injury, ill health and damage to property. We will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards, and we will continually seek to improve our safety performance across our service area. Management at all levels is responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture and for ensuring that appropriate resources are made available to implement this policy.
Responsibilities of Management
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Removals Docklands. This includes setting clear objectives, providing adequate funding and equipment, and ensuring that procedures are communicated and followed. Managers and supervisors must:
Identify and assess risks arising from our removals activities, such as manual handling, working at height, vehicle movements and use of equipment. Implement safe systems of work and ensure that employees are informed of and trained in these systems. Ensure that vehicles, lifting equipment, trolleys, ramps and all tools are properly maintained, inspected and suitable for use. Monitor compliance with this policy, conduct regular site checks and take corrective action where necessary. Investigate accidents, near misses and incidents, and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
Responsibilities of Employees
Every employee of Removals Docklands has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, training and procedures related to packing, lifting, loading and driving. Use personal protective equipment provided, such as gloves, safety footwear and high-visibility clothing, as required. Refrain from reckless behaviour, horseplay or shortcuts that could endanger themselves or others. Immediately report hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe conditions to their supervisor. Cooperate with any accident investigations, safety audits and health surveillance programmes.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We conduct risk assessments for typical removals activities, including domestic and commercial moves, storage operations and transport to and from customer locations. These assessments consider risks such as musculoskeletal injuries, slips, trips and falls, falls from vehicles, collisions in loading areas, handling of heavy or awkward items and exposure to hazardous substances where applicable. Based on these assessments, we implement safe systems of work, which may include team lifting techniques, use of lifting aids, route planning for access to properties, restrictions on single-person carrying of heavy loads and guidance on safe stacking and securing of items in vehicles.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core element of our business, and improper technique can lead to serious injuries. Removals Docklands provides training in safe lifting and carrying, including assessing load weight, using the correct posture, working as a team and avoiding twisting or overreaching. We supply suitable handling equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps and ramps to minimise manual lifting where practicable. Employees must always use the equipment provided and must not attempt to move items that exceed safe handling limits or that they are not competent to move.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained regularly and inspected before use to ensure they are roadworthy and suitable for carrying loads safely. Drivers are trained in safe driving practices, route planning, securing loads and reversing manoeuvres in tight access areas often encountered within our service area. Loads are to be distributed evenly, secured appropriately and checked before departure. Drivers must obey road traffic laws, avoid using mobile devices while driving and must not operate vehicles if they are unfit through fatigue, illness or any other cause.
Client Premises and Public Safety
When operating at client premises or in public areas, we take steps to protect clients, neighbours and passers-by. This includes maintaining clear walkways, using warning signs or barriers where appropriate, controlling vehicle movements in narrow streets or shared access areas and minimising noise and disruption. Our teams will assess access routes, stairs, lifts and loading bays before starting work and will take reasonable steps to prevent damage to property while preserving safety as the first priority.
Training, Information and Supervision
We provide appropriate induction and ongoing training to all employees on health and safety matters relevant to removals operations. This may cover manual handling, use of lifting equipment, vehicle safety, working in confined or restricted access areas and emergency procedures. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that staff understand the training provided and follow the agreed procedures. Where new equipment, vehicles or methods are introduced, additional training will be arranged before use.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. These incidents are recorded, investigated and reviewed so that root causes can be identified and corrective actions implemented. Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, serious injury, vehicle collisions and property damage. Employees are trained in how to respond to emergencies, including raising the alarm, contacting emergency services, administering basic first aid where trained to do so and making areas safe.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Removals Docklands regularly monitors its health and safety performance through inspections, audits and review of incident data. We seek feedback from employees and clients to help identify areas where safety can be further improved. This policy and the associated procedures will be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, our operations and our service area. All employees will be informed of any significant changes and will be expected to comply with the updated arrangements.
By implementing this Health and Safety policy, Removals Docklands aims to ensure that every move is carried out with the highest regard for the wellbeing of our staff, our clients and the communities in which we work.
